  23. This utility is designed to automatically change certain Windows default 
  24. settings including MaxMTU (Maximum Transmission Unit), RWIN (TCP Rcv 
  25. WINdow) and TTL (Time To Live). Basically, these are settings which can 
  26. help prevent fragmentation in data transfer using the TCP/IP protocols 
  27. used on the Internet, and greatly increase modem throughput.  For some 
  28. unknown reason, Windows 95 uses only default settings of 1500 for MaxMTU, 
  29. 8192 for RWIN, 32 for TTL, which are generally inefficient for dialup 
  30. Internet connections. In addition, you can also make changes to PMTU Auto 
  31. Detect, PMTU Black Hole Detect, and Session Keep Alive.  Those settings 
  32. have the following defaults: PMTU Auto Detect Enabled, PMTU Black Hole 
  33. Detect Disabled, and Session Keep Alive set to 60mins.  
  34.  
  35. The only way to change all these before now has been to manually edit 
  36. the registry, a dangerous and time-consuming task.  To achieve optimum 
  37. data transfer rates, it is frequently necessary to experiment with 
  38. different values for these settings. This is a daunting task indeed 
  39. with manual registry editing.   
  40.  
  41. TweakDUN is a foolproof method to change these settings easily and quickly.  
  42. It will install create a shortcut under the Programs Menu to launch the 
  43. application and it will prompt you to reboot your computer after changing 
  44. the settings in order for them to take effect.  It works for all versions 
  45. of Windows 95 including OSR2 and for all language versions.
  46.  
  47. Note:  The evaluation version of TweakDUN will allow you to enter a 
  48. MaxMTU setting in your registry, as well as the ability to enable or 
  49. disable PMTU Discovery and PMTU Black Hole Detect. Many people have had 
  50. good success after only changing MaxMTU. But for maxmimum efficiency it 
  51. is advisable to make an entry for RWIN, and in many cases TTL as well.  
  52. Many people have reported much better data transfer rates *only* after 
  53. making these additional settings, which can *only* be entered after 
  54. registering TweakDUN.

  61. Whenever registry changes are made, it is ALWAYS advisable to backup your 
  62. registry first.  Use a software application such as the Win95 utility

  96. This program requires the Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 Runtimes.  If you 
  97. have not downloaded or installed the full trial version of TweakDUN...
  98. td_12f.zip [1.4mb]... from the TweakDUN website, you can download these 
  99. Runtime files separately at:

  104. Please make sure VB5 Runtimes are installed *BEFORE* you try to install 
  105. Tweakdun. Just doubleclick on the vb5runt.exe file to update/install all 
  106. the latest runtime dll files from Microsoft.  These will be useful for 
  107. many other new programs as well.
  108.  
  109. Next: BE SURE to uninstall *ANY* version of TweakDUN that you might 
  110. already have installed using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. 
  111. Unzip the downloaded td_12.zip file into a temporary directory and 
  112. run setup.exe to install the program.  This will install the files 
  113. and create a TweakDUN shortcut in the Start/Programs menu.  All files 
  114. in the temporary installation directory may be deleted after setup is 
  115. complete.

  117. NOTE:  if you are installing the full version of TweakDUN... td_12f.zip 
  118. [1.4mb]... you may be prompted to reboot during the installation process 
  119. and required to run the installation a second time after your system 
  120. reboots. This is often necessary to update the ole automation dll files 
  121. that may be in use at the time.

  143. Uninstallation
  144. ==============

  146. If you uninstall TweakDUN you can no longer use it to change the
  147. values, which will remain where they were last set by the program.

  149. To uninstall the program follow these steps:

  151. 1.    Open Control Panel
  152. 2.    Open Add/Remove Programs
  153. 3.    Click TweakDUN and Click the Add/Remove button.

  207. Command Line Parameters
  208. =======================
  209.  
  210. NOTE:  This is a special feature for System Administrators and anyone 
  211. wishing to change settings using the command line.  Anyone not familiar 
  212. with this or not needing this capability may simply ignore this section.
  213.  
  214. These options can be specified in a Windows 95 DOS Window or in a
  215. shortcut.  All parameters are optional and may be used in any order.
  216. It is set up to easily change the values without any user input.
  217. The unregistered version will still display the program "about" box,
  218. the changes are entered when you hit the "OK" button, then operation
  219. continues normally. With the registered version the program "about" box
  220. is not displayed when changes are made. It is all automatic.  These
  221. settings are for advanced users only.

  265. Technical Support & Contact Information

  268. Please note that there are no guarantees that changing the MaxMTU, RWIN 
  269. and other settings from the Windows 95 default will speed up your data 
  270. transfer rates.  There are too many variables to ensure the increase in 
  271. every situation.  Your particular ISP, computer configuration and modem 
  272. may limit the speed of your connection more severely than these settings.

  274. In addition, general Internet congestion, a slow web server or bottlenecks
  275. created by intermediary routers in any data transfer situation may preclude
  276. high speed transfers.  Still, our feedback indicates that roughly 80-90% 
  277. of people who experimented with these settings and filled out our online 
  278. survey form had moderate to excellent success with changing these settings.

  297. Occasionally when prompted to "please select adapter", the following response 
  298. is given: "TCP/IP has not been set up for this adapter".  The only workaround 
  299. at this time is to uninstall this version and reinstall v1.1.  This can still 
  300. be downloaded from  http://www.sns-access.com/~netpro/td_11.zip  /  Send email 
  301. to netpro@sns-access.com and your name will be placed on a list to receive v1.2 
  302. as soon as this bug has been fixed.
